I’m happy to announce that I’ve been selected to present at the 79th Annual Scientific Conference of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) in Orlando, Florida.
My presentation, New Lessons From Old Problems: Sources of Error in Forensic Toxicology and Their Legal Implications, will take place on Friday, February 19, 2027, at 9:55 a.m.
Forensic toxicology plays a critical role in the criminal justice system. Courts routinely rely on laboratory results to determine whether someone was impaired by alcohol or drugs. But what happens when those results are wrong?
Despite advances in analytical technology, quality assurance, and laboratory accreditation, errors in forensic toxicology continue to occur. Some go undetected for years, potentially affecting hundreds or thousands of criminal cases.
In my presentation, I’ll examine recent examples of toxicology testing errors, their underlying causes, and their consequences in actual legal proceedings.
This presentation builds on my published research on toxicology testing errors, the limits of laboratory accreditation, and the need for greater transparency and independent oversight.
I look forward to discussing ways to strengthen forensic science with colleagues worldwide.
